Your full day excursion will start in Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage site, capital during Roman times, and religious centre during the Middle Ages. You will love visiting the Roman arenas, the Great Amphitheater dating back to the 1st century, as well as the St Trophime’s church among a few other impressive monuments. You will then drive to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer along the Camargue region, a light-drenched landscape where the sea blends in with the sky. Discover the reliquaries of the two saints (Mary Jacobe and Mary Salome) in the upper chapel decorated with Louis XV paneling, or relax by the seaside resort for its vast beaches and marina.
Arles is a lively Provencal town. Dating back to 7th century BC, it was a major Gallo-Roman city. The major Roman sites, such as the Arena and the Theater, are integrated into the houses and buildings of the town. Feeling inspired by all these landmarks and Arles’s environment, Van Gogh had his most prolific period during his stay.
You will be enchanted by discovering what Camargue has to offer such as pink flamingos, rice fields, and beautiful vineyards. Admire the vast open spaces that are home to herds of black bulls with distinctive curved horns and galloping white horses.
The village of Saintes Maries de la Mer was built between sky and sea, where the Rhone meets the Mediterranean Sea. In the shade of its Romanesque steeple, visitors can stroll through the narrow paved streets, following the tracks of the pilgrims, and appreciate this light-drenched landscape.
Pick-Up/Drop-Off: Your driver will pick you up from the lobby of your Provence region hotel (Aix, Avignon, Marseille, Provence). At the conclusion of the tour, the driver can return you to the hotel, or if you prefer, perhaps drop you off at a nearby restaurant for dinner (If choosing the latter, taxis back to the hotel are to be paid for locally).
