Full-Day Mont Saint Michel Tour
A Scenic Walk Through This Remarkable Architectural Wonder
DURATION: UP TO 8-HOURS
With one of our knowledgeable English-speaking driver-guides, visit the impressive medieval commune of Mont Saint Michel.
An important site in medieval christendom, Mont Saint Michel, along with the Benedictine abbey perched atop it, has long been a popular destination for travelling pilgrims. Situated approximately a half mile from the shoreline amid an expansive tidal flood plain, the city is truly a wonder to behold.
Built by the bishop Aubert at the behest of Archangel Michel, the great commune began as a small church in 709. In 966, the church was rebuilt into the Benedictine Abbey by order of the Duke of Normandy.
In the centuries following, monastery buildings were erected in the Romanesque style, later buildings in Merveille added Gothic influence, and military fortifications were built for protection in the Hundred Years' War. During the French Revolution, the abbey was a prison, but was restored in the 19th century to the abbey you will see today.
Though it is connected to the mainland by a causeway, upon parking and venturing on foot through Mont Saint Michel's winding single-man streets, it is easy to imagine the sense of awe and excitement which medieval pilgrims must have experienced upon finally arriving at this amazing site.
Being situated on tidal flood plains, this breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage site can sometimes be a rock amidst sandy marshes that you can walk across, or an island in the English channel with broken access even by causeway during the rare supertide. Recently in 2015, Mont St. Michel experienced this record high tide, an extraordinary site.
