The Château de Fontainebleau can proudly claim to have been a sovereign residence for eight centuries. Capétiens, Valois, Bourbons, Bonaparte and Orléans, have lived within these walls. Kings and queens, emperors and empresses have all striven to make their own improvements to the château, built around the original keep. Enter through the forest and stop at the typical village of Barbizon. Visit the Palace as well as the ‘Grand Apartments’ which include the superb Galerie and the King’s Staircase and the Ballroom.

After a tour inside, visit the beautiful gardens surrounding the castle. Do not miss the Carp Pool, with a pavilion where meals were served, the Jardin de Diane, and the grotte du jardin des Pins. The park, created in the reign of Henry IV, foreshadowed the Grand Canal of Versailles to be created sixty years later.

Then, take a drive through the ancient forest of Bière, which has always been a magnificent hunting ground, particularly on horseback. In addition, the "bleausards" (local climbing enthusiasts) have created about a hundred climbing circuits, thanks to rocks presenting a wide range of climbing difficulties. In the immediate vicinity of Fontainebleau, you can take a walk on the rocher des Demoiselles.

Last on your journey is a trip to Barbizon. This town was nothing more than a small hamlet until it became the scene of the modern painting revolution in the 19th Century. Painters such as Rousseau and Millet found inspiration here. The village has kept its charming appeal with its houses made of stone and ivy and the gardens full of roses, remaining the “Village of Painters”.

Pick-Up/Drop-Off: Your driver will pick you up from your Paris city-centre hotel. At the conclusion of your tour, the driver can return you to the hotel, or if you prefer, perhaps drop you off at a nearby restaurant for dinner (If choosing the latter, taxis back to the hotel are to be paid for locally).
