Visit to Sachsenhausen
Concentration Camp Excursion
DURATION: UP TO 5-HOURS
With an English-speaking driver, you will drive North of the city to see an unforgettably somber sight at Sachsenhausen concentration camp, a preserved testament to the atrocities of the Holocaust.
You will drive North of Berlin to the site of the original concentration camp. You will note the traingular layout of the camp which was made to optimize every aspect of incarceration. You will see the semi circle where roll call was held. Learn about the diverse group of inmates held within the walls, including Jews, criminals, communists, and homosexuals, each with their own color coded distinction. Many of the barracks remain intact, while a few others have been reconstructed. There are several exhibits to explore throughout the compound, including a memorial to the victims of a death march, barracks museum, watchtowers, and many more.
The Sachsenhausen Memorial is based on a decentralised concept, which aims to communicate history to visitors in the very places where it happened. Thirteen exhibitions on different sites examine the particular history of each and link it to a thematic presentation that sets it in a wider context. These are complemented by temporary exhibitions, held in the New Museum. There are also exhibitions by school groups, resulting from educational projects, as well as workshop exhibitions to present new acquisitions from the archives and depot. After completion of the remodelling work, Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum remains a place of mourning and remembrace in a European context, while facing up to the tasks of a modern museum of history.
