Naples to Positano

Positano is an especially romantic costal town with a picturesque medley of whitewashed houses terracing down a vertiginous slope to the sea. It is Italy’s most nearly vertical town, spilling down from the cornice like a waterfall of pink, cream and yellow villas. When you get to the bottom, there is a soft, gray beach and the town’s church, decorated with a pretty tiled dome.
The Grotta la Porta cave in which prehistoric remains have been found is of certain interest. Those travelling inland will find Nocelle, a small town which can be accessed only on foot, and travelling upwards there are the Peaks of S.Angelo ai Tre Pizzi, Monte commune, S.Maria del Castello, Conocchia, Campo de "Li Galli" and Paipo. The Ponte dei Libri bridge, which crosses a beautiful valley, is well worth visiting. To the South and East, one gazes out across the water to Punta Licosa and the island of Capri. In the distance one can glimpse the small archipelago of Li Galli.
The island group is made up of three islets: Gallo Lungo, Rotunda and Castelluccio. In ancient times the islets were thought to be the residence of the mythical Sirens.
After WW II, Positano became a well-known hideaway for artists and writers – mainly American, following the lead of John Steinbeck. Positano is also known for its winding, cobblestone streets lined with charming boutiques. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes as the streets are cobblestone and very curvy. Stroll through town, browsing the boutiques that specialize in sandals, ceramics, and other local handicrafts.
