Borghese Gallery Small Group Tour
Discover Renaissance art in its original home: A stunning 17th century mansion. Explore works by Bernini, Raphael, Caravaggio, Canova & more
DURATION: UP TO 2.5-HOURS
The Borghese Gallery is a true beauty, both inside and outside. Located in the 17th century home of Cardinal Borghese, it houses the art of the Cardinal himself - collected, commissioned (and even stolen!) during his lifetime. Since this is a private residence and not a sprawling palace, the Borghese Gallery is strikingly manageable. During your visit you'll see all of the rooms and even have time to delve into the stories behind the artworks.
One of the most memorable paintings in the Borghese Gallery is Raphael's ‘Entombment’; a moving depiction of the grieving, including Christ’s mother, around his lifeless body. But your guide will let you in on the story that makes this piece even more moving. The matriarch of a powerful family in Perugia commissioned this piece from Raphael after her son killed most of his family members in a bid for power, then sought refuge in his mother’s home. She turned him away but changed her mind a few minutes later and ran after him – just in time to see him brutally murdered by his enemies. After that story, the theme of a mother grieving over her dead son takes on a whole new dimension!
