Go Off the Beaten Path in the Cannaregio Quarter

Cannaregio, one of the six "sestieri" (neighborhoods), is a pristine part of town, yet to be discovered by mass tourism, and mostly inhabited by genuine Venetians, unlike the other areas of Venice.
Begin this off-the-beaten-path tour, with a knowledgeable English-speaking guide, by passing the colorful open-air market. You will explore the Jewish Ghetto, tower-like buildings, and lively “piazza” called Campo del Ghetto Nuovo. You can admire the façades of the five lavishly decorated Baroque-Rococo Synagogues (one for each different "nation:" German, French Ashkenazi, Italian, Spanish-Portuguese, and finally "Levantine," meaning Greek and Turkish).
Walk down the luminous canals and through Campo dei Mori with its unusual statues of Moorish merchants, to the Gothic church of la Madonna dell'Orto. This church hosts huge canvases by Tintoretto, in particular The Final Judgment and the Adoration of the Golden Calf (the great painter is actually buried here).
Walking along the Fondamenta Contarini, you may stop to take pictures of the famous "Palace of the Camel." Having arrived at the extreme northern point of town, a marvelous view over the lagoon will open in front of you, complete with the island cemetery of San Michele and glass making island Murano.
