Panoramic Madrid Tour
An Introductory Tour to the Highlights of Madrid
DURATION: UP TO 4-HOURS
With an expert English-speaking driver, you'll travel through the main highlights of the central city from the Neptune Fountain and Royal Palace, to the golden triangle of museums, and down the renowned Paseo de la Castellana.
From the ruins of the ancient Arab wall, to small Gothic-style churches, and early Renaissance constructions, Madrid's development is a showcase for a variety of artistic periods. While Madrid grew under Arab rule for two hundred years, little is left of the Arab presence: only some ruins of the wall are preserved, and a tower, which was later turned into a belltower.
Madrid became the capital of Spain in the 16th century, which gave way to a Golden Age and a flux of great monuments in the area that is nowadays referred to as the Madrid de los Austrias. One of the most famous areas of the city, The Austrias district houses the Plaza Mayor, churches, convents, and is full of art and atmosphere.
The Royal Palace, sometimes called the Palacio de Oriente (Palace of Orient), is a wondrous site to behold on your tour. Built during the neo-classical period in the 18th century, the building occupies the area of the old Alcazar of the Hapsburgs, which was destroyed by a fire in 1734. While it is not home to the royal family, it does house an extensive art collection, along with its vast and lavish rooms. With 870 windows, 240 balconies, 44 sets of stairs and 110 doors, it is one of the largest palaces in Europe.
The most avant-garde and modern parts of Madrid are located in the area of newer districts, along its two main arteries: Gran Vía and Paseo de la Castellana. Gran Vía, whose construction began at the beginning of the 20th century, is a nerve centre of shops, leisure establishments, and hotels. Paseo de La Castellana is a magnificent avenue that crosses the city from north to south. The well-known Paseo del Arte is made up of three remarkable museums, situated very close to one another: the Prado Museum, the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum, and the Queen Sofía National Art Centre Museum. The Prado Museum is considered by many experts to be the best art gallery of the world, as it has the most complete and impressive collection of 16th, 17th, and 20th century art.
