Walking Cultural Tour of Madrid
See the Culture of Madrid through the Paseo del Arte
DURATION: UP TO 4-HOURS
A walking tour through the "golden triangle" of Madrid with a visit to the Reina Sofia museum of Modern Art, inagurated by Juan Carlos I and Sofia the 10th September 1992.
From the ruins of the ancient Arab wall, to small Gothic-style churches, and early Renaissance constructions, Madrid's development is a showcase for a variety of artistic periods. While Madrid grew under Arab rule for two hundred years, little is left of the Arab presence: only some ruins of the wall are preserved, and a tower, which was later turned into a belltower.
Madrid became the capital of Spain in the 16th century, which gave way to a Golden Age and a flux of great monuments in the area that is nowadays referred to as the Madrid de los Austrias. One of the most famous areas of the city, The Austrias district houses the Plaza Mayor, churches, convents, and is full of art and atmosphere.
A cultural introduction of the city includes a visit to the San Jerónimo el Real Church, a 16th century church with beautiful artwork and architecture. Pass through the Torrijos Market for vibrant colours and a taste of Spain, and enjoy a walk down the Paseo del Arte and around the Letras quarters.
Take a cultural stroll through the modern art Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. The museum contains a permanent collection on one floor, featuring modern, minimalist and pop art from the likes of Picasso, Miro, Dali, and many other 20th century artists. The most significant piece in this collection is Picasso's Guernica. Temporary exhibits are held on the other two floors of the museum, with presentations of new trends and artists in all types of mediums.
